Weightlifting Wisdom: Leo Totten's Olympic Adventures

In this episode, Leo, a two-time Olympian and key figure in USA Weightlifting, shared reflections on his Olympic experiences and the growth of the sport. He began by celebrating the success of the U.S. weightlifting team at the 2024 Olympics, noting their increased medal success and greater media exposure. Social media, Leo observed, has played a major role in showcasing the athletes' journeys, with fun moments like teaching Snoop Dogg how to lift. This visibility has helped educate the public about weightlifting and distinguish it from other strength sports.

Leo also shared his own Olympic story, starting with his role as a researcher for ABC during the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics. Though not an athlete, he worked behind the scenes, helping broadcasters understand weightlifting. His first official Olympic experience came in 1996 as the team leader for the U.S. weightlifting squad in Atlanta. In this role, Leo managed logistics and often supported athletes as an assistant coach. He described the experience as rewarding, saying it was an honor to help the athletes succeed.

Leo also expressed frustration over the current Olympic trials system, which no longer gives many athletes the opportunity to compete for a spot. He hopes future reforms will offer more lifters the chance to experience the trials, a key part of the Olympic journey in other sports like track and field.

Leo’s reflections not only highlight his own journey but also emphasize the ongoing growth of USA Weightlifting, driven by increased exposure and the hard work of its athletes and supporters.
